Black Solidarity: Liberation for All!

In honor of Black August Jovenes en Resistencia recited poetry at Casa Solidaria del Sur’s poetry night on August 8th, 2015. We shared space with other local poets and remembered black lives that have been killed by state violence. Maria Guardado was there with us as we recited some of her poems. One of them being: University of Life.

What is the history behind Pan African Women’s Day?
The Pan African Women’s Organisation (PAWO), was established in July 31,1962 in Dar Es Salam Tanzania, one year before the OAU (now African Union), and has played a significant role in building African unity and solidarity among women during a crucial period in the struggle for political emancipation. It was the first continental women’s organisation. One of the main aims of forming PAWO was to mobilize women to fight for their liberation especially in countries that were still colonized. Today, it aims to ensure that it remains a relevant and strong voice of women, in Africa and the world. They launched Pan African Women’s Day July 1962.Azania South Africans have celebrated August 9th as Women’s Day even before they achieved their formal independence. The history behind this day (we have renamed as Pan African women’s Day) is connected to the mass march and demonstration of the women of South Africa, 20,000 strong on August 9th 1956 against the apartheid system’s passbook laws that required blacks to carry on them at all times.
When those 20,000 South African Women marched on the Pretoria apartheid government in 1956, their rally cry was ‘When you have struck a woman, you have struck a Rock, you have unleashed a boulder, and you will be crushed!’.
That meant those women were tired of the cruelty of the colonial apartheid system and they were willing to defend their land, their families, their men, their children and themselves for Freedom! We proclaimed then as we do today that All African Lives matter and African women will be on the front lines to defend them!
As part of Pan African Women’s Day weekend during “Black August Resistance” Los Angeles 2015, the All African Women’s Revolutionary Union (AAWRU) of the All African People’s Revolutionary Party (AAPRP) presents our keynote speaker, Ramona Africa, of the MOVE Organization.Ramona Africa is the sole adult survivor of the May 13, 1985 bombing of her home and MOVE headquarters by federal and city forces in Philadelphia, PA. The only person to be arrested, charged and convicted (for survival) in the massacre, she spent 7 years in Pennsylvania prisons.The theme of this event/weekend is “End the Violence, Claim the Victory: All African Women’s Lives Matter Too!”

Telling our stories through poetry & theater!

On Friday, August 24th Homies Unidos invited Jovenes en Resistencia to present our stories about local and global resistance to migrant youth. we invited Rosanna Perez to share about her story of survival as well as another compañera Sandra an artist who spent time with Maria Guardado. We told our stories using poetry and theater. It was a great circle; we laughed and cried and connected with one another ❤

almost on the brink of madness
it was a psychological torture
hoping sadly,
the different torture
that after each interval
that Evil, Evil Advisor
ordered you to practice on me.

You raped me
you gave me electric shocks
you burned and punctured my body
and you damaged my throat!

Honoring Las Guerreras Maria Guardado, Lil Milagro Ramirez de La Esperanza, & Maya Angelou

On April 4th, 2015 Jovenes en Resistencia organized an event to honor the lives of warrior womin Maria Guardado, Lil Milagro, and Maya Angelou. The event took place at our new community space: Solidarity House of the South. Community residents, comrades, and family attended. It was a great way to gather and celebrate the lives of womin who continue to give hope to today’s struggle. We recited and read their poetry and shared space with local musicians.

Casa Solidaria del Sur/Solidarity House of the South

Since December 2014 we have been transforming a space in south central into a community center. Interested residents are becoming involved in organizing. We created a community survey to learn what the community is interested in services and community classes. There is an interest in language, art, chess, gardening, and cooking classes. As well as tenant rights workshops and legal services.

Through community meetings we have agreed to call the space Casa Solidaria del Sur/Solidarity House of the South. It has political meaning since the Black Panthers and other groups have historically organized in that neighborhood. We are working on our mission statement as well as principles of unity!

Community classes begin the week of February 15th ranging from chess, nahuatl, health, and legal services. With love and collective efforts is how we will continue building the space for and by the community.
